A steady place to think things
through, at your own pace.
I'm Ryan Maguire, an integrative counsellor supporting adults through anxiety, low mood, stress, and the harder patches of everyday life. Sessions are a space to be really listened to — where we make sense of what's going on and work, at your pace, towards the changes you're hoping for. One-to-one, in person or online.
Life can feel overwhelming in ways that are hard to explain — coping fine on the outside while things feel much harder underneath.
As an integrative counsellor, I offer a warm, unhurried space to work out what's really going on, build resilience, and find a way forward that actually fits you.
I hold a degree in Psychology and have spent over eight years supporting people through anxiety, depression, bereavement, and low self-esteem — both in private practice and alongside NHS mental health services and Adult Social Care, including a two-year placement within a GP practice.
Much of the work happens in the listening. Being properly heard, without judgement, often brings a clarity of its own. From there we explore what's going on together, notice the patterns underneath it, and build practical, solution-focused steps towards what you want to be different — always at a pace that feels right for you.
How I work
I'm integrative, drawing on person-centred, CBT, mindfulness, and solution-focused approaches rather than one fixed method. The relationship between us comes first — a warm, non-judgemental space where you can think out loud and feel genuinely heard.
From that foundation, we look at what's keeping things stuck and work towards practical change — never rushing, always moving at whatever pace suits you.
What to expect
If you're considering therapy, I offer a free, no-pressure initial conversation to see whether working together feels right. Our first full session is unhurried — background, what's brought you here, and the practical side (confidentiality, how sessions work, what to expect from me).
After that, we check in regularly on how the work is landing for you, so it keeps shape around what you actually need.
Support for what's actually going on.
Everyone's reasons for reaching out are different. These are the areas I most often work with — if you don't see yours here, get in touch anyway.
Anxiety & panic
Quieting a mind that won't switch off, and easing the grip of panic when it takes hold.
Low mood & depression
Working through periods that feel flat, heavy, or hard to name.
Feeling stuck or lost
Making sense of where things are, and finding practical, workable steps towards what you want next.
Stress & burnout
Recognising the cost of constantly coping, and finding a sustainable way to carry on.
Bereavement & loss
Space to grieve in your own way and your own time, without being rushed toward "moving on."
Low self-esteem & confidence
Untangling the inner critic and building a steadier sense of who you are.
Relationship & family issues
Working through conflict, disconnection, or patterns that keep repeating.
Trauma & difficult experiences
Understanding how past events still shape how safe and settled you feel now.
Anger & emotional regulation
Making sense of intense feelings, and finding steadier ways to respond to them.
Not sure where what you're carrying fits? Just say hello — we'll work it out together.
Not sure you're "bad enough" to need therapy?
Most people wait far longer than they need to before reaching out — often holding on until things feel bad enough to justify it. You don't need a crisis or a diagnosis to start. Feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just not quite yourself is reason enough.
Booking an initial conversation isn't a commitment to anything. It's simply a chance to talk, ask questions, and see whether this feels like the right next step — with no pressure either way.

Common questions before you begin.
No referral is needed. You can book a free initial conversation directly, and we'll take it from there together.
Yes. Sessions are confidential, in line with BACP ethical guidelines, with the rare exception of a safeguarding risk to yourself or someone else — which I'd always discuss with you directly wherever possible.
It varies. Some people find what they need in six to eight sessions; others prefer longer-term, open-ended work. We'll check in regularly so it stays your decision.
Yes. Alongside in-person sessions in Tynemouth and Gosforth, I offer secure video sessions via Microsoft Teams or VSee for clients anywhere in the UK.
I ask for at least 48 hours' notice where possible. Life happens — if something comes up, just let me know as soon as you can.
In practice, the terms are often used interchangeably in the UK. Both describe talking with a trained professional to work through difficulties — the label matters far less than whether the approach and the relationship feel right for you.
We'll talk through what's brought you to counselling, cover some background, and go over the practical side — confidentiality, how sessions work, and what you'd like to get from them. There's no pressure to have it all figured out.
Yes, entirely. Therapy works best when it's your decision throughout, and you're free to pause or end sessions whenever feels right for you.
